Things to Do

There were once eight gates located within the city walls of the Old Town, as well as a further 33 towers, although further gates were later added. The eight gates were Chelminska, Sailors’, Old Toruń, Holy Spirit, Paulianer, Cauldronmakers’, Bath and Bridge. The New Town also had three gates of its own, Straight, Katherine’s and James’s. Only three of these gates now survive, which are the Holy Spirit Gate, Bridge Gate and Sailors’ Gate. Some of the losses have been relatively recent, the Bath Gate was only taken down in 1900.

Unlike many Polish cities when much was damaged during the Second World War, there was relatively little impact on the historic heart of Toruń. This has meant an excellent array of Gothic buildings have survived and the churches are mostly undamaged. Due to how Toruń was established as two different towns, there are also two squares, the Old Town Market Square and the New Town Market Square.
