One of the best known Polish dishes are pierogi, or dumplings, which can be either savoury or sweet and can be filled with meat, cabbage, fruits or cheese, amongst many other possible options. Bigos is another favourite, especially during the colder months, and is a stew made from a range of meats and also sauerkraut and vegetables. Sausages or kielbasa are part of the Polish cuisine as well, with a range of different types made most frequently with pork, beef, turkey or lamb.
More local cuisine to Toruń includes pierniki, which is Polish gingerbread and is a specialty of the region of which the city is very proud. The location of Toruń has historically meant that it has had access to fine wheat for flour, as well as local providers of honey. Goose is often also served in Toruń, usually served with red cabbage.
There are very few international chains in Toruń city centre, there’s primarily just a branch of McDonald’s, although there are more international chains at the two main shopping centres. Within the city, the national chain of Manekin is present (Rynek Staromiejski 16, 87-100) and is well-reviewed, as well as Sphinx (ul. Żeglarska 31, 87-100), which often receives slightly less favourable reviews. There is also an outlet of Cukiernia Sowa at Rynek Staromiejski 4, 87-100, which is a growing national chain of bakeries which has now started opening locations in the UK.
