The foundation stone for this church was laid by the Bishop of Chełmno in 1309 and it was designed to be used as the parish church for the New Town. Initially used by Cistercian monks, it was later used by the Benedictine order. There are wall paintings of note and a late fourteenth century Gothic Crucifix, which is designed to represent the Tree of Life. Flying buttresses were constructed to support the structure, although with one exception, which can still be seen, these were incorporated into a fifteenth century expansion.

There is no admission charge, although donations are appreciated. Opening hours vary, but the church is usually open in the day and visitors are welcome to attend services.
